Matt Cain pitched two scoreless innings and Pablo Sandoval and Melky Cabrera were the hitting stars as the trio of San Francisco Giants led the National League to victory in the All-Star game.
Matt Cain helped the National League secure victory in the All-Star game. The Senior Circuit stars jumped on Justin Verlander in the first with Sandoval's bases-clearing triple the big hit of the inning.
Verlander conceded the five runs on four hits and two walks as the occasion seemed to get to the American League starter who was over throwing his pitches.
It will be curious to see if a similar situation occurs if and when the Detroit Tigers make it to a World Series.
Tuesday the Tigers ace put the AL in a hole that they were unable to recover from as the NL pitchers threw a combined six-hitter.
Cabrera added to the scoring in the fourth with a two-run shot to left field after Matt Holliday had brought home Rafael Furcal with the sixth run off the game.
Cain went the first two allowing a single hit followed by two Washington National starters, Gio Gonzalez and Stephen Strasburg.
The Mets R.A. Dickey, considered the favorite to start for the National League before manager Tony La Russa selected Cain, pitched the sixth giving up a hit and also hitting Paul Konerko.
Rookies Mike Trout and Bryce Harper both got into the action. Trout was 1-for-1 with a walk and a stolen base while Harper was 0-for-1 with a walk and was out trying to make an aggressive play on the base pads.
Detroit Tigers are 1.55 to win the World Series while the Giants can be backed at 2.60.
