Roger Federer comfortably defeated Janko Tipsarevic at the O2 Arena.
Roger Federer comfortably defeated Janko Tipsarevic 6-3 6-1 in his opening match of this year's ATP World Tour Finals in London.
The 31-year-old Swiss star, who is looking to win this title for the seventh time, never looked like losing to his Serbian opponent for the first time in six meetings at the O2 Arena on Tuesday afternoon.
Federer broke Tipsarevic at the first attempt in the opening set and went on to win that in half an hour before he strolled through the second set and eased to a 68-minute victory.
I'm very happy to be playing so well. It's my third trip to London this year. The other two were pretty special and I hope something similar is going to happen this week.Roger Federer
Federer's win was also a record 40th in the season finale, taking him past Ivan Lendl's 39 wins, while Tipsarevic faces an uphill battle to progress in the eight-man tournament having qualified for the first time in his own right this year.
The Serb revealed on Monday that he was not feeling at his best after being forced to retire during a match in Paris last week.
On his win, Federer said: "I'm very happy to be playing so well. It's my third trip to London this year. The other two were pretty special and I hope something similar is going to happen this week. I'm happy I played so well because Janko's a great player.
"Everybody knows how much I care about Wimbledon. It was great winning and getting back to world number one. I had a great summer. I gave everything I had and to get silver at the Olympics was special too. I've had a great year but I hope it's not over yet."
Federer is 3.75 to win the ATP World Tour Finals, Britain's Andy Murray can be backed at 3.50 and world number one Novak Djokovic is 2.20.
