Manchester United and Arsenal have agreed a fee of £24million for the services of striker Robin van Persie on a four-year contract.
The 29-year-old Dutchman has been at the Emirates Stadium for eight years and will meet with staff at Old Trafford in the next 48 hours to discuss personal terms. He will also undergo a medical.
The Arsenal captain, who has scored 132 goals in 278 appearances for Arsene Wenger's side, announced last month that he would not be extending his deal with the club, which is due to expire next June.
A statement released by the Old Trafford side said: "Manchester United is pleased to announce it has reached agreement for the transfer of Robin van Persie.
"The deal is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms. A further announcement will be made in due course."
The Dutch international scored 44 goals in 57 games for Arsenal and the Netherlands during the 2011-12 campaign.
Van Persie's signing will boost Manchester United's chances of winning the Premier League after they were beaten to the honour on goal difference last season by bitter rivals City.
United are currently 1.002 to win the Premier League, with the Etihad club 51.00 and Arsenal at 751.00.
If Van Persie manages to agree terms and pass a medical, he could go straight into the squad for United's first game of the Premier League season, which is against Everton on Monday night. Sir Alex Ferguson's outfit are 2.00 to win, with Everton 3.75 and the draw 3.50.
