The batting pair of Jonathan Bairstow and Ian Bell kept England well in the mix come the end of play on day two against South Africa at Lord’s.
Ian Bell worked well with Jonathan Bairstow.England finished with a total of 208-5 thanks to the partnership between Bairstow and Bell which produced 124 runs before the latter was dismissed for 58.
A fine over from Vernon Philander got its rewards when Bell edged the ball to Robin Petersen to end what was a crucial partnership for England.
Matt Prior did a good job to steady the ship once again, as he picked up the run rate and finished the day on 22 not out.
But the second day at Lord’s was about the Yorkshire batsman Bairstow who showed great character to finish the day on 72 not out, with England trailing South Africa by 101 runs at the close of play.
England are now 1.001 to win at Lord's and draw the three-Test series 1-1, while the draw is 1.001 and South Africa are 1.001.
